Why no licence numbers are printed here

An earlier version of this page carried a number against every state. Those entries were not verifiable against any regulator, and publishing an unverified number is worse than publishing none: it invites a consumer to rely on a record that may not exist. They have been removed, and they will not return until each one has been confirmed directly with the issuing regulator and dated.

What replaces them is the search itself. The licence that matters is held by the producer or agency that prepares a quote, and it is held in the state where the risk sits. A number printed here would tell you nothing about that. A search you run tells you everything.

Running the regulator search

  1. Identify the producer entity. Ask for the legal name of the agency, or the individual producer, exactly as it appears on the quote.
  2. Identify the state. Use the state where the property, vehicle, or business is located, not the state you happen to call from.
  3. Open the licensee search published by that state's insurance regulator. Every US state publishes one, and the regulator's own domain is the only trustworthy source for it.
  4. Search the name, then read four fields rather than one: the licence status, the licence type, the effective and expiry dates, and any appointment to the carrier that issued the quote.
  5. Write the result down. A screenshot with a visible date settles a later disagreement faster than a recollection does.

What to require in writing, before anything is bound

  • The name of the producer entity and of the individual producer handling the file.
  • The licence number, the issuing state, and the date the licence took effect.
  • The name of the carrier, the carrier's own licence or financial strength disclosure, and the appointment through which the quote is issued.
  • A copy of the declarations page before any payment is authorised, so the limits can be checked against what was quoted.

Limits of this page

Nothing here is a licence, an appointment, a filing, or a representation of solvency. Every figure quoted is a proposal rather than a contract. Acceptance, limits, and price are set by the insurance company after it reviews the application and any inspection it requires. Carrier and producer names are not published on this site. The firm able to quote a policy in Washington is not the firm able to quote one in Ohio, and a static list would be misleading almost immediately. Every quote you receive names the producer, the agency, the carrier, and the licence number relied upon, in writing, before any decision falls due.
